Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gene Caballero, Co-Founder of GreenPal, Inc., located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

GreenPal has been described as the Uber for Lawn Care, and it's the easiest way for homeowners to find, schedule, and pay for their services. Our customers are homeowners that are looking for the easiest way to eliminate the chore of finding someone to mow their lawns. Our second set of customers is the lawn care providers. These are who we build the app for. Not only do we handle their demand creation, but we also handle their scheduling, payment processing, and route optimization. We make their lives easier by allowing them just to mow, and we handle the rest.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the landscaping industry most of my life and saw the inefficiencies of trying to run a successful landscaping company. I knew there had to be a better way to solve the problems that a homeowner had in trying to find a reliable company to mow their lawn and connect them with a local guy who wants to cut their grass. What motivates me is seeing the success that these landscaping professionals are having by using our product.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think the biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been seeing thousands of landscaping professionals sign up for our service. Not only are we making them more money, but we are making their lives easier. This has not been done in the landscaping industry yet, and we are very proud to have built this for such a hard-working industry.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is knowing that nothing will get done unless you do it. There are no days off, there are no vacations, and there are no guidelines on how to build a successful business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not wait for a perfect time. There's no such thing. Work on your business while working your regular job. Let that fund your passion.
  2. Ask strangers for feedback, not your close friends and family. Most of the time, your friends and families are going to tell you that it is the best idea they've ever heard. Get advice from someone that will tell you no.
  3. Get ready to be alone. Friends and acquaintances do not understand how hard it is to start something from scratch. You will have to focus on building your product or service by yourself without any help from anyone.
