Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Lin, Co-Founder of Green Salt, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Green Salt is a plant-based salt alternative that's better for your heart health. It's low sodium and packed with vitamins and minerals. It has a delicious salty and savory taste that goes well with any dish. Green Salt is for people looking to reduce their sodium intake to protect their heart health or for people looking to eat healthier in general.

Green Salt is made from 100% dehydrated Salicornia, a vegetable that grows by the sea. It belongs to the same family as Quinoa and Amaranth. Salicornia's salty taste comes from its diverse mineral content. It's a nutrient-rich vegetable with Vitamin B3, Magnesium, Copper, and Potassium.

We grow our Salicornia in Baja, California, Mexico using saline agriculture. Saline agriculture is one of the most sustainable forms of agriculture because we recycle unarable saline lands by the coast to grow Salicornia.

Tell us about yourself

High blood pressure is a pandemic bigger than COVID, with nearly 1 in 2 US adults having hypertension. After meeting my co-founders and discovering their cultivation of Salicornia, I thought it was the perfect healthy salt substitute. We then decided to work together to launch Green Salt.

What motivates us each day is the feedback we get from customers, telling us how Green Salt has improved their health or has allowed them to enjoy the flavor of their food again.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The development of the product, the creation of our online store, and successfully marketing Green Salt.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Marketing is difficult, especially nowadays with so many companies competing for your attention. We need to be constantly evolving our marketing strategy to keep the business viable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose a product with a wide appeal.
  2. Identify 2-3 channels that you believe you can find success on.
  3. Focus on those 2-3 channels and keep improving the product.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There isn't one thing that works for everybody, and everyone has a different working style, so find a way to run the business that fits your personality and lifestyle.
