Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Hoffmann, founder of Green Dirt Farm, LLC., located in Weston, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We craft the very best artisan sheep milk cheeses using farm practices that protect our soil, take care of our animals and nurture our community. The quality of our cheese-making speaks for itself. Since our first years of making cheese for sale, our cheeses have won more than 80 awards in prestigious cheese and artisan food competitions like the American Cheese Society annual competition, the World Championship Cheese Contest, and the Good Food Awards. Our customers are Food Adventurers and Conscientious Eaters.

Tell us about yourself

I started Green Dirt Farm for two main reasons. One was a desire to raise my children where they could run around in the fresh air and experience the joy and life lessons that I learned while growing up on a farm. The other reason was borne of my urgent feeling that our food system needs farmers willing to undertake the challenge to farm more sustainably, and I wanted to be among them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe that my biggest accomplishment has been building a business that has core values of sustainability, humane animal farming practices, and care for our community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are so many hard things (that's what makes it so satisfying)!! But if I had to pick one thing in particular...one of the hard things for me about being a business owner has been learning how to say no to things that don't make sense for our business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what you want.
  2. Stick with it even when it feels really hard.
  3. Be kind to yourself so you can be kind to others.
