What's your business, and who are your customers?

Food & Beverage Lifestyle Brand. Video and Post content creator and publisher of cooking instruction, wine & beer appreciation, tastings, and reviews. We are a B2C company with a corporate client that books us for virtual wine tastings.

Tell us about yourself

After 27 years in commercial banking, the passion for my career was gone, and I didn't appreciate having my success in the hands of others. Launched the business in 2019, but it was a side/hobby thing. When COVID took my job in June 2020, I decided to really push the business forward.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, it was initially the first membership sold. Meant a lot, even though it was a friend. As a follow on that, the first corporate wine tasting event that I hosted was such a huge undertaking and was nerve-wracking. These were all strangers, and I had to promote myself more than what I was doing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Fully analyzing every expenditure and deciding if it is necessary and will help the business at the time or in the future. I am bombarded by cold emails and cold calls every week from random vendors, and knowing to ignore is a good skill to have.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you don't know something, seek advice. Don't assume you know everything.
  2. Write down your grand vision and what you want to accomplish just to align your thinking. Businesses morph as they grow, so any business plan you write will be obsolete quickly.
  3. Maintain focus. Way too easy to be distracted by things not core to your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

  1. Market all the time. Don't rely on others to spread the word.
  2. If you are going to use consultants, do your diligence. Way too easy to spend money unnecessarily.
  3. Always conduct assessments of the business as you go along
don't wait until the end of the year.
  4. Get a good lawyer and good CPA.
