Let Gravity Move You - Gravity Physiotherapy
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Derek Geldrich, Owner of Gravity Physiotherapy Inc., located in Coldstream, BC, CA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Gravity Physiotherapy was created to provide a space where I can show people how to be the best at what they do. My goal is to give you all the tools you need not only to recover from an injury but how to prevent it from happening again in the future. I believe that the key to success in physiotherapy is to build a partnership with a client, understand their problem, develop the plan, and achieve it together. Exercise prescription is my strong point and is what sets me apart from others. Learning how to improve your strength, flexibility or endurance is how you truly improve yourself.
Tell us about yourself
The prospect of being able to run a business the way I see physiotherapy evolving over the next ten years gave me the drive to start working on a business plan. Physiotherapy is moving in a more dynamic role of providing hands-on therapy, individualized exercise plans, and oversight in the clinic to reach rehab goals. People with serious injuries need specialized programs to return to sport, and life is a challenge I look forward to accomplishing with them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been that most of those I see in the clinic are referred from those I am seeing or have seen in the past. That is the greatest compliment and litmus test I use to determine if I am meeting the needs and goals of my clients. It elevates the standard I hold to myself with the treatment I provide because people trust themselves, friends, and family to me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is learning to balance day-to-day bookings and not over-extending myself. Physiotherapists can often become overworked due to the physical nature of the job, which can lead to injury. I have the urgency to see someone as soon as possible to help them get on the road to recovery, which can lead to long days. Knowing how to balance a week so I can continue to work healthy and enjoy my time off has been something I will always be mindful to evaluate and keep in check.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you want to start a business of your own, take the time to learn how the one you are currently working for runs from the ground up. Becoming self-sufficient before you go out alone will give you confidence and see where you can do better.
Start early and start slow, don't give yourself a definite deadline. This will reduce stress and account for unforeseen tasks that need to be done.
As you start out network with others who share your field, they can offer advice and caution about common mistakes.
