Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alyssa Pike, Founder of Gratefully Nourished, located in Sterling, VA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I care a lot about helping those struggling with disordered eating or eating disorders experience freedom with food. I help them shift from trying to be the smallest version of themselves to learning how to take care of themselves and establish a rhythm of work, rest, and play. Most of my work is through one on one nutrition counseling/coaching. My clients have the option of incorporating their relationship with Christ into their counseling, and all of my clients currently do so.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Alyssa, and I'm an eating disorder recovery registered dietitian who practices from a non-diet, weight-neutral approach. That means I'm not a fan of diets or measuring your worth or health by how much you weigh, how many miles you ran, or how few calories you ate. (Honestly, there's so much more to you & health!)
I'm also a wife, daughter, friend, and follower of Jesus (not in that order). I like to write blogs and talk with people through the Gratefully Nourished podcast, in addition to my counseling services. I love what I do because I love people, and it's a gift to be able to help them feel seen and encourage them to figure out what it really means to take care of themselves.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It's always rewarding when people learn that their identity will never be found in what they eat or how small their body size is. It's an honor to watch people let go of the disordered habits they picked up throughout their lives and instead learned how to truly take care of themselves and eventually understand their own unique gifts/skills so they can go out and contribute their gifts to the world, regardless of how big or small they might be.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Probably comparison. For me, it's important to remember why I'm doing what I do and what the long-term vision is. Otherwise, it's easy to fall prey to what I see others doing, and then I can get lost.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start slow and keep going. I started where I could with what I had. I knew I liked writing and taking pictures, so I started with an Instagram account, then a blog then began working on what needed to be done for practice.
- Take inventory of your gifts and skills and put those to use however you can. Pull from all the experiences you've had and be open to learning.
- Prepare to fail. You are going to fail at something at some point. It might be a mistake with a client or a course that doesn't launch well, but it's part of the process. Know that you're in good company.
