Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jonathan Rahim, co-owner of Good Buds Catering, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is quite unique. We are a catering company, but with a modern twist. We design menus to fit the theme of what our clients are looking for. Whether it's a tour of the Caribbean or a Mediterranean cruise with various stops, we curate the meal to make our clients feel like they're tasting it as if it was made in that region. Our customers can be anyone wanting to add that extra special touch to their next celebration.
Tell us about yourself
I've always had a passion for food. I learned to cook at a very young age (age 6) and have loved it ever since. I was always a hyper kid cooking was a great place to use that energy for something good. As I grew older, it got me through some tough times; it genuinely made me happy. This passion and love for food got me on MasterChef Canada. After that, it was time to pursue my dream. The show created a platform for me to follow that dream of opening up a catering company where I can nurture my cooking abilities. I'm motivated every day by seeing the satisfaction of each of our clients to visually see that our food puts a smile on their faces.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to see the consistent growth of our company. I've had the opportunity to do events all over Canada design hundreds of unique menus fit for some of the most unique events. We catered the 25th anniversary at a penthouse suite in downtown Winnipeg with a request for a meat carving station, build your own pasta bar, and a taco bar; the event was a resounding success. We consistently push ourselves to outdo the last best thing we did.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest parts of being a business owner is finding that balance between work life and family life. I am constantly thinking about business. If I'm not in the kitchen preparing an order or recipe development, then I'm in my books or on the internet researching new recipes from around the world. As a business owner, I'm always learning.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Follow your passion. I love going to work every day because food is my passion.
- You're only as good as the people around you. It's important to have the right team. I couldn't have been successful without my team.
- Have a strong desire to learn. I'm constantly learning. Always be open to constructive criticism and critical feedback. Being open to learning from all sources, I take the time to learn what I can from the people around me.
