Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashleigh Taylor-Schmidt, Founder of Golden Root Acupuncture, located in Lakewood, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At Golden Root Acupuncture, I offer solutions for individuals and couples who wish to grow their families. I support all women and men who want to improve their reproductive health and increase their chances of conceiving. I work with couples aiming for natural conception, starting from preconception planning and coaching to when they get that BIG FAT POSITIVE. I also work closely with patients who wish to enhance their assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures, such as IUI and IVF. Aside from acupuncture, I prescribe Chinese herbal formulas, which regulate hormones and the menstrual cycle, improve digestion and sleep, reduce stress levels, and many other aspects of overall health.
Tell us about yourself
First and foremost, I'm a mother of two toddlers. They are my motivation and drive to do what I do. I decided to become an acupuncturist when I was in my early 20s. I was intrigued by the thought of specializing in women's health and fertility; however, I was intimidated by it and not entirely sure I wanted to take on the responsibility. But when my first kiddo was born, everything changed. I let go of that fear and did everything I could to learn as much as possible about fertility acupuncture. I'm so happy I made that leap! Becoming a mom is the best feeling in the world! Helping someone else achieve that feeling is a very close second!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I found out I was pregnant with my first kiddo a month into opening my practice! I then became pregnant again two years later. So my biggest accomplishment has been growing two tiny humans and a thriving acupuncture clinic at the same time!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I still struggle with the dreaded "imposter syndrome." No matter how long I practice or how many courses I take, I never feel like I know enough. Luckily, I'm getting better at trusting the process, and my patients are seeing results, which is really all that matters.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a very clear and direct message, and know EXACTLY who your ideal client is before spending any money on advertising.
- Learn how to budget and try to save up for slower months. It'll save your butt!
- Never stop learning about your industry and how to better your skills. If you get bored, that's a sign you're too comfortable and need a challenge.
