Making Results Happen for Your Business - Godson Michel
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Godson Michel, President of Blue Surge Marketing Agency, located in Lindenhurst, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Blue Surge Marketing Agency. It's a full-service digital marketing, website design, and consulting firm.
Our customers have established business owners, nonprofit leaders, and solopreneurs who need help figuring out how to maneuver the ever-changing marketing landscape so their companies can thrive.
Tell us about yourself
Multipotentialite. That's probably the word that describes me best. What does it mean? Well, it's a fancy way of saying a person with many interests and creative pursuits. I'm also a capitalist at heart, so I've always had a hunger for figuring out ways to solve problems and getting paid to do so.
My first real business, KickBackz, was a secondary marketplace for sneakers and streetwear. After about five years of running it, I realized I was great at marketing my own company, and I took those skills and decided to start doing the same for other businesses. That ultimately became Blue Surge Marketing Agency.
Regardless of the project that I'm working on. My motivation stays the same. I want to be able to be an example for kids growing up like myself who didn't come from much but have that hunger to do great things for their family and community.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've done a lot, but my biggest accomplishment as a business owner was making $1M in sales when I was 22.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Hiring, training, and managing a team is probably one of the hardest things you can do as a business owner. It's easy to run something by yourself, but once you start adding different minds, personalities, and people into the mix, it can get hectic at times.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The three top tips I'd give to a startup entrepreneur are:
One, think about cash flow, meaning how you're going to keep the money coming in and how you're going to fund your business when it's new.
Two, build a business that can run without you. If you have to work every day to make money in your business, you've really just created a job for yourself. That's probably not what you meant to do.
And last but not least, don't skip out on hiring a good bookkeeper or accountant. It'll make your life easier. Trust me.
