#GoSoloStories: Joshua the Psychic

Hey, I'm Joshua MacGuire, also known as "Joshua the Psychic."

Tell us all about your business...

I'm a professional psychic, astrologer, and Law of Attraction life coach. My clients are people who want to maximize their potential – they're usually career-focused or romance-oriented.

What's your background and motivation to get into the solopreneur life?

I started doing psychic readings at 16 – it was what I did while in college. When I moved to New York City, it was to do advertising. But then my agency folded, so I returned to readings to make ends meet. Unbeknownst to me, one of the readings I did was for a journalist doing a psychic exposé for Time Out New York. She gave me the highest rating, and soon I was getting calls from all around the world. So although I didn’t plan on the psychic-astrologer professional path, since I was helping people, it made sense to stick with it. It felt like it was meant to be.

It's very easy to stay motivated when people are excited to meet with me, and I get to make a difference in people's lives.

As a business owner, what does success ultimately mean to you?

Helping people, of course, but I think now my mission is to bring the world together more by what we all have in common, rather than what separates us. If I can do that, I’ll feel very successful. Still, I believe that if I help one person, there can be a ripple effect, and I'll help many.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing is knowing that no matter how much you do, you can always do more and improve – there's no finish line. I suppose that's one of the best things, too.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a business today?

1. Do it for love. If you come from a place of love, and aim to give love, teach love, and love what you do, all other things will follow. Love is the basis of all energy, so it's also practical – if you do everything with love, you'll have more energy.

2. Make marketing fun. You’re going to have to do it anyway, so if you’re not having fun creating content, you’re doing it wrong. Marketing is your chance to connect with people in countless creative ways, so share who you really are in your marketing – with your design, writing, videos, podcasts, etc. – and you’ll be providing the most value, because you’ll be giving your most authentic self.

3. Have a life. If you’re just into your work and not cultivating other areas of your life, you’re not just doing a disservice to yourself but to your clients, too – they need a well-rounded, balanced person who's happy. How else will you make others happy, which is essentially what results in a successful practice.

If there was one thing you could do repeatedly to help grow your business, what would it be?

Probably videos. They're very telling of your personality, and the more people get a sense of me, the more comfortable they are working with me. They feel like they already know me, which helps me to get to know them.

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to keep it all together?

I rarely work past 8:30pm. I take off weekends off to spend time with friends and family, and keep my business smartphone in a drawer.

Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and best business resources/books?

Although it’s not specifically for business, Abraham Hicks Law of Attraction books and videos really helped me get into the vibrational space to allow business to flow into my life without taking it over. I also love Brian Tracy, though he’s not very Law of Attraction; he’s more grit and determination, which I think also has its place.
