Kindness + Comfort, Joy + Laughter - Glim and Glow Home

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tinika Green, founder of Glim and Glow Home, located in Jersey City, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Glim and Glow offer home fragrance gifts. I hand make candles, room sprays, reed diffusers, and more. The products are designed to make your home smell great without overwhelming your senses. They're beautiful enough to feel like something special, but the price is accessible.

Tell us about yourself

Candlemaking was borne out of an after-work ritual. At the end of a long day, I would light a candle, make a drink and relax. Often the candle would soot, and be so overwhelming, that it was hard to focus on anything else. I wanted something a bit more subtle- like when you walk into a great hotel, and the aroma evokes a feeling within you, but you're not consumed by it. My candles are definitely fragrant, but they're crafted to enhance your mood.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business! As we all know, the last few years have been tumultuous, to say the least. There have been many pivots and adaptations, and we've all had to make adjustments time and time again. But this is what it means to be a business owner—being fluid and open to seeing your business from a different perspective so that it is still viable.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you're a solopreneur like I am, juggling all the hats you wear can be overwhelming. It's crucial to know when it's time to ask for support from your network or community so that you're business thrives. Sometimes when you're deep in it, it can be difficult to see the big picture.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait! The conditions will never be perfect- take the leap.
  2. Ask for feedback- often. It is a valuable teacher and will only help you grow.
  3. Once you launch, talk about your business as often as you can. Cheerleaders and resources are everywhere, often in unpredictable places.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship isn't for the faint, but it can be quite rewarding. As you build, try to remember your why. Maybe it's supplemental income; perhaps it's the satisfaction of creating something or helping someone else grow. Staying connected to it will help your creativity and drive when you come up against a challenge.
