Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay Stuart, owner, and founder of Glam Expressway, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Glam Expressway is a women's fashion boutique located in DUMBO, Brooklyn. We carry a specially curated collection of designer and contemporary clothing, bags, jewelry, and accessories. At Glam Expressway, our style aesthetic is cool, chic & effortless. Meaning our pieces are versatile, stylish, and easy to wear. Glam Expressway features local and international designers. Our store has been featured in Cosmopolitan, Latina, OK, and In Touch Magazines.
Glam Expressway is 100% female and minority-owned, and we believe that comes with responsibility. We support our community by carrying brands owned and designed by female small business owners. In an effort to be sustainable, we also have a vintage & consignment section where our customers can opt to sell or shop from pre-loved pieces.
One of the best things about running Glam Expressway is the sense of community we get from our customers, who are typically people who live or work in DUMBO, and also our beloved tourists that come to take in a slice of Brooklyn!
Tell us about yourself
I would describe myself as a mother, an entrepreneur, a feminist & a fashion enthusiast. I previously worked in banking as a celebrity makeup artist. Also, I did some live television when I worked as a host for the Home Shopping Network. I think all of that exposure in the fashion industry & with sales, along with seeing a need for a cute shop in the neighborhood, lead me to pursue my dreams of owning a boutique.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was winning the Dumbo Dozen Award from our local BID for improving our neighborhood! Along with 11 other women from our community, I was recognized back in 2019. And then, of course, just making it through the pandemic and the past few years took a lot of resourcefulness. I think that all entrepreneurs who problem solved their way through the past few years should be proud of themselves and consider that in itself a huge accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think that one of the most difficult things that come with owning a business is staying positive no matter what is happening in the economy or society in general. Staying the course and keeping long-term goals in mind can be difficult.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't be afraid to ask for help when you don't have the information.
- Collaborate with other business owners when you can.
- Hire an accountant from the beginning, so you don't get into trouble when tax time rolls around.
