How Selling Your Car Works - Givemethevin.com

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John Wolfe, President of Givemethevin.com, located in Fort Worth, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Retail public customers: Purchase cars from individuals online. B2B customers: sell these cars wholesale to other dealers at Manheim auctions.

Tell us about yourself

I opened a restaurant bar during college at age 19, been working for myself since. Now I'm 50, nearly 30 years in the wholesale car space. I enjoy commodity markets and arbitrage, and I decided to put more sophistication into the wholesale auto space. I got into the business because all the car dealers I knew seemed to have money, so I got into the space by the example where I saw consistent financial success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having zero debt, zero investors, and running 2Billion in revenue in 12 months last year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being hooked to the firehose all day, every day, it's hard to turn it off. Also difficult to embrace managers to do those few "special" things that only I can do. When you're modeling to scale, those little secret things that only you can do must be replicated in others, or it will not and cannot scale.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be ready to be wrong, be ready to bet it all, and be ready to lose it all. Once you find your happy place, then pull your bets back and feel lucky that you made it through that risk envelope that many do not traverse through unscathed. You nearly have to go broke once or twice to be able to do it right. However, always keep the mattress money on tap so you can start over if you do fail. You need a backup parachute and a backup oxygen source, just in case. You have to be a marketer, a banker, an operator, an accountant, a contract negotiator, and, first and foremost, a great salesperson. Two types that make big money in today's world 1. business owners and 2. salesman....the more you think about that statement, the more you'll understand what I'm saying.
