Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Whitney Otstott, Owner of GirlPower Fitness, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is GirlPower Fitness, a small, women-only fitness facility in southwest Austin. I offer in-person personal training and online group fitness classes for women. My goal is to help my clients get healthier, move without pain, feel proud of themselves when they look in the mirror and have confidence knowing they're strong and amazing. I want to help my clients feel empowered.

Tell us about yourself

I started teaching group fitness classes right out of high school, which was a very long time ago! I've been in the fitness industry for 28 years, to be exact. Teaching fitness classes was a side job that I did alongside a full-time corporate job in communications/public relations. After 17 years in the corporate world, I decided to turn my true passion for fitness into my career, and I started GirlPower Fitness. I love helping women find their inner strength as their body becomes stronger.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every client that tells me that I've motivated them in some way or helped them achieve a goal. Their success is my success, and I truly love helping people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Generating business and new leads with a small budget.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. For every one idea you have that works, you'll probably have nine that don't. Don't get discouraged. Every situation is a chance to learn.
  2. Allow your business to have a life of its own and grow organically. My business had changed in ways I didn't initially expect, and I haven't forced it into a specific mold.
  3. Your reputation is everything. Provide better customer service than people expect, and they'll sing your praises, even after they're no longer clients.
