Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gina Charles, Freelance Web Developer, B2B Tech Blogger, and Ghostwriter, located in Trinidad and Tobago.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business relates to assisting B2B Fintech, SaaS (Software as a Service), and other technology businesses that are of interest to me with web development and content/blogging strategy as a ghostwriter. Technology is such a vast space that new and varying tech is created often. There are untapped areas that will pique my interest that I would love to serve and look into both currently and in the future. Who knows, this could be non-tech related as well.
Tell us about yourself
My background is mainly in computer science, and before that, I did odd jobs, like, at one point, working in data entry and customer service. I found that going the entrepreneurial route for a while would help me not only to learn about myself but to have the freedom to do the things that I love that holding a traditional job would hinder. I wanted to be my own boss as well. This was a learning curve as there was a lot of time to fill, and being my own boss was also a study in persistence and resilience. Not giving up, though, many times I felt like just throwing in the towel and going back to mainstream employment. I am motivated by seeing the progress I've made from building something of my own creation, along with the satisfaction of helping others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been my mindset. I had to quickly learn that having a growth mindset and seeing things in terms of abundance can go a long way in keeping stamina alive. Mindset is a really big one for me because everything else stems from the mind, thought, then action; without that, there is no business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is coming up with ideas to keep getting clients and, therefore, to keep going as well, not losing sight of why I started this venture in the first place. Creating that consistency in staying power has been hard.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Everyone has a different perception and background in life, and therefore one size fits all, advice may not work for everyone. However, in terms of if I can talk to my past self when I first started my business, I'd say don't go all in; do this with a plan, work on your business with at least another stream of income that is, getting a part-time job while building your business and focus on what works have short iteration times for experiments within your business, that is, if something doesn't work within three months, try something else instead.
