Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gill Kelly, Director of Making Stuff Better Ltd., located in Holmfirth, UK.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We run an Executive leadership coaching company that supports school leaders in the international schools market. We also offer group coaching, a Leadership mastermind, and coach training. Our customers are school Headteachers/Principals. We are committed to creating regenerative spaces for leaders to pause and reflect on the being, thinking, and doing in their roles.
Tell us about yourself
I have had the privilege of running three educational organizations in the UK state system, and during my last headship, I retrained as a coach. My business partner and I set up MSB initially as an excuse to work together (!), but once the coaching work took off, we began to grow quickly, especially through the pandemic. What motivates me each day is the unknown, as well as the work we do in helping people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Only last week, we established a stellar member of our advisory board that has been set up to serve our newly created foundation. The fact that such high-quality people want to give up their time for free to work with us is humbling. Also, serving over 280 leaders around the globe makes me very proud.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Doing everything at first and knowing when to let go and give it to someone else.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Research the market- if there is competition, go for it.
- Don't wait too long to hire good staff- it is a game changer.
- Understand your numbers- it is your company, and you need to see how you can grow.
