Polished Copy That's Clear and Compelling - Gill Hill Edits

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gillian Hill, Owner of Gill Hill Edits, located in Boise, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a copywriter for small creative service providers, particularly women. I'm also THE editor for copywriters.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in business for 5 years now. I started editing fiction and, before long, realized I loved to help write authors' websites and blurbs, which is how I got into copywriting. I specialize in brand voice, which is understanding what specific word choices to use to help you stand out from your competitors and really sound like yourself. And as an editor for copywriters, I know we break the rules all the time to create an authentic brand voice for our clients, so I keep that front and center when I edit.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Scaling to six figures with no contractors or employees and only working around my kids' school hours.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Never being 'off.' I work hard to create boundaries between my business and my personal life, but I still find myself thinking about the business a lot!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Think hard about what you love to do and why. By starting with the why and working outward, your marketing (talking to 'your' people and attracting them) becomes much easier.
  2. Use the 12-week planning system to focus on just 1 or 2 'growth' projects at a time. I really want to do all the things for my business, but I achieve more when I focus on a couple of things and do them really well.
  3. Don't spend too long doomscrolling and comparing yourself to others on social. Remember that business owners post their wins and the content they think will help people buy, not the reality of their day-to-day life. And if you're prone to this, figure out tactics in advance (like limiting your screen time and creating in the morning before you consume social media) to help.
