Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nate Haggett, Founder of Get Healthy with Nate, located in Framingham, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is focused on coaching others into a happier, healthier life. I work with clients who desperately want to lose weight, increase energy, and permanently change their relationship with food. Often, clients come to me because they feel trapped in a cycle of weight loss and gain. They have tried everything from restrictive fad diets to extreme exercise and feel defeated when they struggle to reach their goals. What they don't realize is that willpower is not enough to make permanent changes, it is way too easy to revert back to old habits.
I teach my clients to pay attention to the signals that their brains and bodies are sending. Over the course of 90 days, we work together in a small group to test our assumptions about what it means to be satisfied, experiment with food choices, laugh together, commiserate about challenges, build confidence, and celebrate our wins. By the end of the program, I know that people's lives have been transformed along with their relationship with food.
Tell us about yourself
My journey to a healthier life began in 2016 when I looked in the mirror and almost didn't recognize myself. I realized that my clothes no longer fit properly (an unfortunate discovery when getting ready for a friend's formal wedding), I was constantly sluggish and hangry, and I overall didn't like the way I felt. I even would go so far as to say I was miserable. As my understanding of my own health evolved, I knew that I wanted to help others overcome those same challenges. Changing a relationship with food is hard, but it is possible. Knowing that I can help people make that change is what keeps me going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building a business is about so much more than a single accomplishment. In my first year, I was juggling my 9-5 job and classes for my coaching certification in the middle of the first COVID lockdown. Despite all this, I was able to welcome my first class of amazing clients and find my way to profitability.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I love working with clients and talking about health, that's the easy part. The technical and administrative aspects of running a business are much harder! Building websites, managing business financials, and building a marketing plan were all new to me. I've had to learn by doing, which also sometimes means that I have to learn by undoing. Trust me, a little patience with admin work is worth it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
It's so important to build community. Don't be afraid to ask for help, be open with your colleagues and family and ensure you have a good support system around you. It's impossible to build a business alone. There is an old African proverb that says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together". I take this to heart every day.
