Pioneer of Walking Workouts - Get Fit With Rick
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rick Bhullar, Founder of Get Fit With Rick, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a fitness trainer who specialises in low-impact walking workouts. These workouts are designed to help you hit your step goal right from home. I run an all-in-one fitness membership platform designed to help people lose weight. Members get access to exclusive workouts, nutrition advice, live talks, live workouts, recipes, meal plans, and a private community group. My customers are women from 45-65 who want to lose weight and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
Tell us about yourself
I started as a professional dancer for 10 years, traveling the world and dancing for artists such as Lady Gaga, Kelly Rowland, Take That, Snoop Dogg, and others. Eventually retiring in Dubai, I transition into a personal trainer. It was here where I created Dubai's longest-running and largest boot camp until the pandemic shut down the business. This led me to post my workouts online and create a new style of workouts called Walking Workouts. My YouTube channel grew 250k subscribers within a year and continued to grow until I eventually closed down my in-person business to focus online fully.
When I first started as a trainer, I simply wanted to help people get fit. However, after having helped many clients make life-changing transformations, I began to realise just how powerful this stuff was. Not just for your physical health but for your mental health. Living a healthy and active lifestyle translates into many areas of your life, and I want to continue to share that message. To help people feel happier, healthier and break the yoyo dieting trap.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is creating a business that allows me time to spend with my family. I can work from home, and my wife can be the mother she wants to be. With the birth of our second daughter recently in our family, this business allows me to be the best father I can be and support the whole family.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is probably switching off your business brain. Everything starts and ends with you, and there are a million things you need to think about. Early on, I would constantly be distracted with new ideas and found I wasn't always present. However, after reading "The Perfect Day Formula," I learned how to organise my days & prioritise my tasks; it allowed me to switch off my business brain and always be present in the moment.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Tunnel vision focus. It's too easy to get distracted by new ideas or different directions to take the company. However, set a goal and have tunnel vision focus until you get there. Don't be afraid to say no to opportunities that take you off of track with your own goal.
- Delegate tasks. I've spent too much time wasted on medial tasks that someone else could have done. Use Upwork to hire freelancers. This will buy you back valuable time to focus on the top 1% of your business. Delegating tasks has allowed me to grow my business much faster.
- Find a mentor, or don't be afraid to spend money on education. Find someone who has done what you're aiming to do and listen to their advice. This will save you years of trial and error and help you avoid critical mistakes. Whether it's a course, membership, YouTube videos, podcasts, etc., aim to constantly grow and analyse what's working and what's not.
