Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie German, Owner of German Business Consulting, located in Fresno, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

German Business Consulting is a hybrid coaching/consulting firm that helps professional service businesses solve problems at the source. Every business hits roadblocks, and those roadblocks can cause extra stress and waste time and money.

These roadblocks can present themselves in a lack of processes, poor leadership or management, or even growth that the organization isn't prepared for. Specific solutions are established to move through the roadblocks, so you once again have a business you love.

Tell us about yourself

I believe everyone has two "whys," a selfish why and an altruistic why. Selfishly, I wanted to set my schedule, make the money I wanted to make, and create a business I loved. Altruistically, I genuinely want to help business owners.

Often someone starts a business because they know how to do the technical side of the business. However, there is more to running a business than just the technical side. Having the knowledge, skill set, and experience, I love helping other business owners experience the freedom of a smooth-running business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing my clients succeed. Knowing that I was able to help a business owner gives me great joy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is making decisions. Decision fatigue is real. It can be exhausting. I have come to realize that sometimes I am going to make significant decisions, and sometimes I am going to make terrible decisions, but that terrible decision is only a failure if I don't learn from it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research and trust your gut in making decisions. Be decisive.
  2. Don't spend too much time on things that don't matter. For example, get a website up, but don't stress over if the wording or layout is perfect. You can optimize later. Depending on the industry, a website might not be necessary, even though everyone says it is.
  3. Develop a clear client avatar, your ideal client. You can market to the right audience when you know who you serve. This will lead to more fulfillment for you and your customers.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business is challenging. You hit new roadblocks even when you think you have it figured out. There are always answers out there. If you can't do it yourself, find someone who can help you. The best athletes have coaches. Why wouldn't you want one for yourself?
