Freelancer With a Passion for Technology - George Parks
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with George Parks, a freelance Software Engineer based in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a freelance software engineer, and I develop apps and websites for a host of small businesses around the world.
Tell us about yourself
I first started freelancing in high school. I needed to make some extra money on the side, so I started working on my CS skills and built some websites for my school. This experience allowed me to realize my potential, and I learned how much I enjoyed helping businesses with technology. I started up my freelance business in earnest as a senior and have been working at it ever since!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Getting my name out there. It took a while to promote myself as a competent engineer, but I caught a break when I got a large-scale contract early on that allowed me to prove my skills. While I can't reveal specifics, it allowed me to establish my name in the industry and acquire more connections for my business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Managing your time. It's hard to stop yourself from working on a project you're passionate about, even when you're on vacation or it's late in the evening. It's important to control your energy and time, so you don't burn out, no matter how passionate you are about your idea.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure your customers love you. Distinguish yourself with your customer service, and people will spread the word about your business. It's free marketing and ensures repeat customers.
- Stay up to date with industry trends. In order to stay competitive, it's essential to keep up with the latest trends and developments in your field. By staying informed, you can stay ahead of the curve and be positioned to take advantage of new opportunities.
- Don't be afraid to seek outside help. Starting and growing a business can be a daunting task, and it's okay to seek guidance and support from others. There are almost certainly professionals in your industry that are willing to respond to your emails, so give it a go!
