Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Geoff Shaw, founder of Geoff Shaw Photography, located in Waterdown, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Wedding Photographer based in Hamilton, Ontario. I work with couples that may not have much experience in front of the camera and value those in-the-moment shots. I prioritize capturing candid moments and making the day as enjoyable as possible. I encourage individuality, playfulness, and spontaneity to capture the personalities of every couple that I work with while also documenting the once-in-a-lifetime moments from their day!
Tell us about yourself
Photography has always been something that has been a part of my life ever since I got my first camera at 10. From then, it was one thing that always gave me joy. Little by little, I learned more and more technical skills through research and collaboration. With an initial focus on landscape photography, I eventually branched out after seeing the potential photography had as a business. I worked hard to network and was able to capture small events and take portraits for friends. From there, I was able to build a portfolio, and I slowly grew to photograph more and more events, portraits, and eventually weddings!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
By far, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner was being able to quit my 9-5 job and focus on my photography full-time. It was a dream I had had for years, and I definitely worked hard to achieve it. I had to spend countless hours building up my portfolio, social media pages, and workflows and establishing my brand. It wasn't easy, and there were plenty of challenges along the way, but the sense of accomplishment and freedom I felt when I finally made the leap was priceless. It was a huge risk, but it's paid off so far! I am now able to do what I love every day and be my own boss. It's a feeling that I am incredibly grateful for and one that I hope to continue to grow and build upon in the future.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a small business owner is the constant need to wear multiple hats and juggle a variety of tasks. As a small business owner, you are responsible for everything from sales and marketing to accounting and customer service. This can be overwhelming at times, especially when you are trying to grow your business and balance your workload. It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture, which can lead to burnout and frustration. It's important to find ways to manage your time effectively and delegate tasks when possible to ensure that your business stays on track and continues to thrive.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Network and build relationships with your community. For example, as a photographer, it's important to get your name out there and make connections with potential clients and other industry professionals. Attend local events and join photography groups to meet new people and showcase your work.
- Invest in yourself and your business. Continuing education, upgrading your equipment, and hiring professionals for things like branding and marketing will help set your business apart and give you a competitive edge.
- Have a clear vision and business plan. It's important to know what you want to achieve exactly with your business and have a plan in place to get there. Set clear goals and objectives, and regularly review and revise your plan as your business grows and changes.
