What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an award-winning marketing writer and branding consultant who taps into and leverages the true essence of an individual or business to communicate their greatness. I learned and honed my skills for 30 years working on brands such as Nickelodeon, TV Land, Comedy Central, and Bravo. Simultaneously, I studied many healing energy modalities to learn more about my own intuitive gifts. My tagline, "every curl on my head is an idea," refers to my ability to quickly come up with creative solutions -- some of which are my own thoughts and some which are intuitive hits I get from elsewhere. My clients range from solopreneurs and career changers to big media companies and established non-profits.
Tell us about yourself
I first launched my Creative Marketing company out of my desire to help local businesses in my own backyard. I wanted to work with change-makers, risk-takers, dreamers, and adventurers who had an idea for a business but needed guidance and encouragement to make their dreams come true. Media companies (such as Essence, Masterclass.com, Tumblr, and Viacom), non-profits, and other organizations come to me for creative marketing solutions as well. I find joy in unruly creativity, taking a chance, and faith.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The fact that I launched my company in 2019 and have grown and thrived during the unpredictable pandemic years that followed is something I am very proud of. And while growing my own business, I was helping others do the same. Together we all supported one another, encouraged one another, and really kept each other on track to keep going even when it was hard to think straight. I have seen the powerful benefit of recognizing your truth as seen in your branding and messaging as a giant motivator that you are on the right path. My clients -- big or small -- had that shared experience.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is letting go. Delegating or handing something off to someone else is a challenge, but any business that wants to grow must find ways to bring in help, so the work gets done and in a way that aligns with your core values.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Follow your gut (not your head). Easier said than done, but everyone is intuitive and can feel in their body what's true and what is not true for you. Your brain wants to protect you and will often guide you out of fear. You can use your brain when you're trying to remember your password.
- Build a network of supporters, mentors, and promoters. You can join networking groups or seek out your local Small Business Association or Chamber of Commerce or a place like SCORE where volunteers and staff are there to help fill in the areas you are not yet an expert in.
- Seek out a branding consultant so that your message is clear and aligned across all touchpoints for your potential new customers.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
There are so many free resources out there to help fill your head with encouragement, knowledge, and more. Seek out podcasts, audio books, Ted Talks, and more so you can train your brain to think big and discover your own super powers. Because you definitely have them.
