Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patricia Simpson, owner/consultant of Game Changing Etiquette, located in Champaign, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Game Changing Etiquette is an etiquette consulting business. I provide etiquette dinners and workshops to corporations, universities, and civic groups, but I am also certified to do individual coaching.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked in Career Services at higher education institutions for over 25 years. During that time, I recognized how vital professionalism is in the job-finding process. I began by coaching my students individually and in groups on etiquette and later obtained my certification through The Etiquette Institute. I have since worked with all types of organizations, from non-profits to corporations, while still serving my primary population of higher education students. I love teaching my clients that, while etiquette does present as a 'list of rules', ultimately it is about respect for oneself and others that drives those rules. When we all live with that respect, it truly is a game changer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is always a 'returning customer.' While I love when people I'm coaching learn something new or walk away excited about an event, the biggest joy I have is when someone who has attended one of my events or had me talk to their group previously reaches out again.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Since I also maintain a full-time job at a university, the most challenging part of owning Game Changing Etiquette is finding time to do both well and still maintain a healthy work-life balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Figure out what you're passionate about. This takes time, and if you aren't passionate about what you're doing, it can be nearly impossible to keep it going. Reward others, and focus on serving rather than being served. Take care of your clients and let them know you appreciate them. Make both the product/service AND the mission your drive. If you're just creating or doing something, and you forget about the 'why,' it's easy to lose focus.
