A Fearless Advocate - Galerie Robertson Arès

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Robertson and François Arès, owners of Galerie Robertson Arès, located in Montréal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Galerie Robertson Arès is a contemporary art gallery located in the artistic hub of downtown Montreal. Surrounded by museums, galleries, and auction houses, our gallery exhibits its show-stopping aesthetic in good company! Our collectors are from all over the world, from installing artworks in private homes to major institutions and corporate collections. Our customers believe in our motto to promote unique, innovative, 21st-century artists.

Tell us about yourself

As partners, François and I share a combined twenty years of art dealing experience, having worked with major collectors and collections throughout Canada and the United States. We are actively involved in the Montreal art scene.

Having worked in the art world for so many years, we came to realize in 2019 that we wanted a positive work environment. One where trust and transparency are at the forefront. What motivates us each day to do what we do, is that we share a common vision as to where we want our business to grow and that we both have a passion for the artists that we represent.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our business model focuses on balancing a strong in-person experience and online presence. This approach allowed us to navigate the pandemic and significantly grow our business. We did so by having daily brainstorms, being proactive with all of our artists and creating opportunities for them, and always ensuring that all our suppliers are paid on time.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The initial start-up period! François and I tackled every detail of our business, from being hands-on during the renovations before the opening to the most minute accounting details. Wearing so many hats at once can be tricky!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Strive for excellence in every aspect of your business.
  2. Stay true to your mission statement.
  3. Associate yourself with A+ businesses (your framer, your accountant, etc.)

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Never be idle. There is always something to improve in your business. Learn the ebbs and flows of your year to plan when to make improvements during your downtimes and when to be able to perform at your best during peak times.
