Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luke Mahoney, CEO and Co-Founder of G-Plans.com, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

G-Plans is a digital therapeutic saas product that allows a user to take a quiz (or input their blood work panel), and our proprietary AI engine will then serve up a customized weight loss or nutrition program that changes every seven days and enables the user to hit their health and wellness goals. There is then a ton of utility in our app, with tools and usability around the programs we offer to support users along their journey.

We now also offer full food and delivery capabilities so users can order their prescribed meals via our prepared food partners, get their groceries delivered from all major grocery stores in the US, or click a button and order from most major restaurants that comply with their programs. We essentially give people all the tools they need to live a healthy lifestyle and hit their goals, and our system acts as a nutritionist in their pocket to help shape their choices.

Our customers are predominately female, based around the world, and are looking to live a healthy lifestyle.

Tell us about yourself

I first met Dr. Goglia, our partner, when I was experiencing some health issues in my early thirties, and I was amazed at his roster of clients and also the passion he has for helping people. I had a background in performance marketing and knew we could help him take his knowledge and scale it to the masses. So, myself and my business partner (John Levan) did just that, and we have grown G-Plans into the most comprehensive nutrition digital weight loss products in the world; with a team of 75+ employees 20M users worldwide, we did all of these with no venture funding at all. My motivation every day is definitely waking up and winning, but I also love to work hard and always have. As you grow from one phase of your business to the next, your opinion of winning really changes, and now it's about the company evolving, my people growing, the product getting better every day, and ultimately me learning and growing as a person.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Providing for my family and, ultimately, my team and seeing the team flourish and grow as individuals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Dealing with the day-to-day rollercoaster of running a business and meeting payroll etc. No day is the same, and it's very important to stay even keel and not get too emotional, as running a company can consume you and will. It's important to strike that balance and switch off, which is something I have always struggled with.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn to get comfortable with the uncomfortable and roll with the waves that you (will) get hit with every day.
  2. Always strive to build a brand wherever possible... Doesn't matter if it's a small storefront, restaurant, or whatever you do; try to think of how to position what you are doing to become 2 locations or build a brand. That will become your biggest asset.
  3. Product - Double down and focus on the product above everything. Doesn't matter what you sell, product or service, etc.; at the end of the day, what you are selling is a product, and in today's highly competitive environment, you need to have an edge. Focus on making your product the best it can be, and the rest will follow.
