Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patrick Ventuzelo, Founder and CEO of FuzzingLabs, located in Cerny, France.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The main goal of FuzzingLabs is to teach and help people improve the security of their programs and codebase. That's why we create dedicated online courses, provide custom services, and build security tools for them. Since our specialty is fuzzing, an automated technique to find vulnerabilities in source code, our customers are mainly startups and tech corporations. A lot of them are actually blockchain protocols because security in this domain is one of the most critical, and we have a good track record ;)
Tell us about yourself
I started cyber security more than 10 years ago with reverse engineering and vulnerability research. I discovered blockchain in 2017, and since then, I've tried to improve global web3 security knowledge by conducting multiple public research and talks across various conferences.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm really proud that we are a team of almost 10 people after just 1 year and a half. We are building and improving open-source security tools daily and doing that in a pure bootstrap way!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a business owner, you need to make hard choices like stopping contracts to keep your employees happy and motivated even if customers' projects and defined pricing are interesting. That's why you need to make sure to have good customers who value your work. Apply the Pareto rule, and if 20% of your customers cause you 80% problems, stop working with them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, identify your existing skills and the ones you want to improve in the following months/years. Then, go 100% on it, and don't forget to document everything you tried with feedback on what worked and what didn't. Finally, identify what (tools, website. etc.) helped and what was missing to make you go faster. Congrats, you now have business products ideas ;)
