Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christa Ordonez, Founder of Functional Flow Pilates, LLC, located in Leander, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Virtual Restorative Pilates and Mobility training for that wanting to avoid the doctor's office and PT clinic.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Pilates instructor who wanted to break out the PT clinic walls. I didn't like being limited by insurance in providing care for my patients. I knew there was a gap in care that needed to be filled for those that graduated from Physical Therapy and those that could prevent injury and avoid Physical Therapy. I use Pilates and Mobility training as a method of Restorative Movement and returning people back to moving their best and feeling their best.
My motivation is knowing that no one can do what I do the way I do it except me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
For several years, I spent half my day at the PT clinic and half at the Pilates studio, came home, and private train clients on the side. My biggest accomplishment has been able to convert to full-time and running my own in-person and virtual training company.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being your own employee and employer at the same time. Accountability to yourself! You create your own goals, projects, and deadlines. Yet also have to fulfill them and complete them to be successful and continue to move your business forward.
As my business is service-based, I am the business owner/employer that drives the business and directs traffic to my business. As well as the employee that provides the service. I always joke about how I have to be a good enough employee to myself, so I can get a raise =)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Looking to start a business- just do it. I could have started this business many years ago and saved myself years of dissatisfaction and unhappiness with the jobs I had. But you live and learn. And come to find out - people NEED you to create a safe space and serve.
Run a business- prioritize breaks and self-care. Burning out and running off fear-based vibes will not lead you to success. Know that there is abundance out there! If you show up as your best self and do your best work, the best people for you will come. Set your boundaries, set your schedule, and get it done.
Grow- stay creative. I go on walks and rely on nature to keep me curious and creative. Disconnecting from the stress of entrepreneur life is the best way to come back clear-headed and rejuvenated to keep connecting and growing. Make connections that you might not know how it will serve you in the end!
