Elegant Natural World & Modern Simplicity - Fulcrum Jewelry

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Phillips, Founder of Fulcrum Jewelry Studio, located in Princeton, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is creating unique, well-crafted, and nature-inspired jewelry for the person who appreciates true craftsmanship and creative design. It is the concept and design principle of balance that informs and inspires my designs and where the name "Fulcrum" originates. An ever-growing appreciation for the elegant perfection of the natural world coupled with modern simplicity makes Fulcrum Jewelry what it is: the perfect accessory for a special occasion or every day.

Tell us about yourself

It was 2010 when on a whim, I decided to take a jewelry-making class. I learned to use tools I had never even seen before to manipulate a material that felt so permanent. I learned the skills to transform raw materials into delicate, shining tokens of beauty. It was this transformation of material that transformed something in me. It is the inherent balance of solidity and perceived effortlessness that drives my love of metal and fuels the creation of jewelry that honors the simple yet perfect forms of the natural world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would probably be that I have persevered to continue my craft over many years of life changes, challenges, successes, and failures.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing the MANY "hats" that come with being in charge of EVERY aspect of your business. It truly shines a light on your strengths and weaknesses and your dedication to making it work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Leave behind any expectations of how easy or hard you think it SHOULD be to be "successful."
  2. Define for yourself what success looks like before you begin- this can change over time.
  3. "Know your numbers"- If you have to email 20 retailers, 3x each, to get one response, that's the way it is. Don't feel bad because you think you should get a "yes" for every email. Don't be shy about reaching out and re-reaching out to get an answer.
