Award-Winning Freelance Web Designer - Tiago Lavis-Fernandes
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in Web Design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiago Lavis-Fernandes, a freelance web designer located in Manchester, United Kingdom.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a freelance web designer based in Manchester (UK) designing and developing websites for small to medium businesses. I have won multiple awards for my creativity and level of customer service, which is also reflected in the 100% 5-star reviews from my customers.
Tell us about yourself
I've always had a strong interest in technology ever since I had my first IBM computer (I was six years old). I was one of the first in Portugal to have access to the internet and was deeply curious about how websites were made; that's what got me into trying and learning more about it. What motivated me every day to continue doing what I do, it's the gratitude from clients who show me how happy they are with that "website" weight off their backs. I feel useful doing what I love, designing professional-looking websites.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To fully support my family in more than just financial help, my wife is disabled, and my son is six years old, so working from home and spending time with them while doing what I love is one of my biggest accomplishments. Plus, with my website on top of Google generating enquiries all the time, it gives me the stability to spend my time doing just what I enjoy, designing, without having to deal with sales or anything like that. I feel very grateful for all the benefits of becoming a freelance web designer brought me.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I believe managing people is one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner; that's why I am a freelance web designer and don't employ any staff! :)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top three tips I would give anyone starting a freelance web design career are probably the only three tips they'll ever need: First, treat people how you'd like to be treated and make sure you are proactive, always trying to help. Remember, anyone can create a Wix website, but what they can't get with DIY website services is a familiar and helpful face that's always there for them, removing every obstacle from their way. Secondly, make sure you invest in your own website; don't neglect it! It's a long-term game, but once you start getting noticed by search engines, you'll never have to worry about getting new clients again. Finally, be clever with your finances; only invest in software that your business REALLY needs. If you pay 20% taxes on every incoming payment, put 30% away and forget about it, just in case. The peace of mind of having your finances looked after will help you stay creative and get rid of any negative thoughts when you're designing.
