Assets for Your Next Project - Freelance Creatures
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Olivia Clermont, Character Designer and Digital Artist of Freelance Creatures, located in Cedarburg, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an independent freelance artist that specializes in 2D and 3D monster and character artwork. My clients range from those making their own video games to those who want to see their own characters brought to life.
Tell us about yourself
While I was attending MATC pursuing an Associates Degree in 2D animation, I actually found my love for 3D modeling and animation. Once I graduated, I began using my newfound 3D skills to create models and renders of characters. That then evolved into making public VRchat avatars, and that's when I began to really get my name out there and gain a small following. That following is what keeps me going and what motivates me to continue creating.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Gaining my small following did wonder for my motivation to keep accepting commissions and creating free public content. As I create more, my following grows, and I gain new clients!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Since I'm an independent artist, I set my own schedule and determine how much work I'm able to take on at a given time. Something I still struggle with is finding a work/life balance, especially since I work from home. Even though I try to establish a time for myself, I often find myself pushing myself to work regardless.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find your niche. I started having more regular clients when I found the VRchat community and offered my 3D modeling services there.
- Even though I still struggle with it, avoiding overworking yourself and finding a work/life balance is essential. Burnout isn't fun and hurts your quality of work.
- If you're pursuing a career in art, develop your style, and don't undercharge yourself! It's worth losing cheap clients in order to find those that really value your work.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I have a public Discord! I primarily talk to clients through Discord, so that is the best place to find me.
