Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caryn Gillen, Founder Coach, based in Eugene, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a performance and leadership coach for founders who want to answer the question, "What’s next?" Together, we answer that question and create a clear plan to get there fast. What we know is that every leader needs an advisor; it’s integral to their performance.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up in Alaska. I paid my way through college with commercial fishing. I was the GM of a restaurant and did project management. The work I do now has its roots woven through all of my past experiences. I'm motivated each day by the impact one person's life can have—founders and leaders in particular. We all benefit when they are resourced and have access to clean power.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
A high percentage of my clients continue to work with me again and again and refer new clients to me. There is no better compliment to my work or honor for me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
All the roles that come with the job aren't the one thing that got you into it. Coaches want to coach, but to have a successful coaching practice, you're doing all the other parts of the business, too (luckily, I like most of those!).
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Play the long game. If you're in it for a quick win, don't even start.
- Keep going. It's the job. Just keep iterating. You'll get where you're going.
- You're the boss. No one else is going to tell you what to do--they also aren't going to pat you on the back. You have to do both of those things for yourself and do them well. Be a fantastic boss to yourself.
