Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Boniel, co-founder of Forever Photography, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a woman-owned wedding photography business that caters to big and small weddings, elopements, and engagement photoshoots.

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved doing something out of the ordinary, something creative, not 9-5, and special in a sense. It's so fun to have a unique job where our couples trust us to tell their story on what they consider a very important day in their lives. It's also really self-fulfilling hearing great feedback from our couples who tell us we were able to photograph them even more beautifully than they ever thought was possible and hearing about their families admiring our work. I've always been a photographer in a sense, but weddings help me combine my passion into an actual career where I can make money and still have a really cool job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to love our jobs. Yes, we work long, hard hours, but we love doing what we do, so it makes the day fun.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing how to set boundaries and limits for yourself. Most people think owning a business allows for so much freedom, which it does, but it also means you end up working more than the typical 40 hours a week because you love your business and want to succeed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Talk and connect with others in the industry to learn more about the business. Shadowing and working under someone also really helps.
  2. Get a good accountant so that you have one less thing to worry about and can hand your financials off to a professional to make sense of everything.
  3. Invest in yourself. Do the homework, take classes, do tons of research, and don't be afraid to reach out to others in your industry.
