Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Baker, founder and CEO of FOMO Baking Co., located in Ridgewood, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

FOMO Baking Co. is a fresh-baked direct-to-consumer cookie company that is totally inclusive. All products are free from gluten, dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, and soy (and baked in a dedicated commercial kitchen, so there is no cross-contamination). They taste so good you would never know they are top8 allergen-free or vegan friendly, which makes them the perfect treat for birthday parties, holidays, corporate events and gifts, and more! All items are baked fresh and shipped nationwide!

Tell us about yourself

I quit my job as a corporate lawyer in order to follow my dream of launching FOMO Baking Co. After being diagnosed with celiac disease and being advised to do dairy-free as well, I discovered it was difficult to find fresh-baked desserts that tasted great and were truly safe (not a "one-off" item that made me a traditional bakery and possibly subject to cross-contamination).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The small things feel like the biggest accomplishment, such as when a parent tells me that our cookies are the first time her four-year-old has ever tried a chocolate chip cookie because they had never previously found ones safe for his allergies.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to wear all of the hats is the most difficult part. Besides formulating recipes and new products, I also do all of the baking, marketing, podcasting, accounting, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor. Even if it isn't someone directly in your field, it is immeasurably helpful to have someone to ask advice from and bounce ideas off.
  2. Be flexible. Things will always pop up and change the course of what you may have planned (like COVID did right after FOMO launched). You have to be able just to redirect and change course and keep chugging along.
  3. Be patient. Businesses don't grow overnight - it takes a lot of time and perseverance.
