Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luis Cadavid, executive partner of Flowers House Group, located in Miami, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are growers, importers, and wholesalers. Our clients are importers, regional wholesalers, and florists.
Tell us about yourself
I've been working in the flower industry for almost 11 years. I started early while I was in college. I have learned all aspects of the business from being a receptionist, sales, packing, and all aspects, which gives me a better idea of what we can do to improve.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I believe our biggest accomplishment has been consolidating the flower chain from production to regional wholesaling. Having control of most aspects of the flower industry has given us the advantage of being at the vanguard of the industry.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Dealing with people. That is the biggest obstacle that we have and have had for the past couple of years. Getting people to do a good job and to fulfill their roles has been extremely hard.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Find your niche, be it a high-end product or cheap product, stick to it. Don't try to take over the entire market. Never sell at a loss. Take risks while you are young.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Be patient; there are no overnight successes. It takes dedication and time to succeed. Also, don't quit your day job unless you are making money. Not all businesses succeed. Several of my ventures have failed over the years.
