Flowers are her favourite medium - Lindsey Kinsella
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with florist, Lindsey Kinsella owner of Dustymoon Floral Studio, in Liverpool.
Tell us about yourself and your journey to where you are today...
I originally studied fashion and got a degree in Fashion Illustration from University of the Arts London. After graduating I worked in various community arts based roles I kind of realised I like being creative but not necessarily in the field I was working in. So, when I was 25 I went back and retrained in floristry and horticulture.
This then led me to a horticulture teaching role working with young people with disabilities. I absolutely loved this job for so many reasons but I always kept my hand in with floristry, mainly working on weddings during this time. When we hit 30, me and my partner decided to pack in our jobs and move to New Zealand. It was a bit of an off the cuff decision and a tough one because I did love my teaching role however, I'm really happy we did it.
Whilst living in New Zealand we met a lot of really inspiring people, they have a can-do attitude over there that is really infectious. We gained loads more valuable experience within floristry and horticulture. I think being inspired by the people that we worked with gave me the final push to throw myself into setting up Dustymoon full time when we came home.
What motivates you each day?
I love flowers! I think I have finally found the medium I like to work in! Also flowers can bring a lot of happiness to people and it is really nice to be able to be part of that.
What makes your flower business stand out?
We are a creative, alternative floral studio. We always say no two Dustymoon bouquets are ever the same! One of our big plans moving forward is to try and grow more of our own cut flowers to use in our work.
To what would you attribute your entrepreneurial success?
Honestly, probably hard work, time and graft. No secrets I'm afraid! Our main aim is to try and grow our customer base at the moment. We have workshops coming up as well offering weekly bouquet deliveries, pop-up stalls and offering a wedding and events service. The more people that find us and like our work the more we grow.
What's been your biggest accomplishment to date as a business owner?
We always think our biggest accomplishments are the weddings we work on. We are starting to get booked up for next year and this is really exciting.
What is the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner?
The variety of different things you have to be able to do.
