Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Zappa, Founder and Owner of Flow Acupuncture, located in Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Flow Acupuncture is a wellness clinic in SLC, Utah, that uses acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to enhance and improve the quality of life of our patients. Our patients are Utahns of all ages looking to improve their health and wellbeing without prescription drugs or surgery. They are interested in a whole body approach to healthcare.

Tell us about yourself

My biggest motivator, and the reason I named the wellness clinic ‘FLOW’ is my passion for ‘flow states.’ I truly believe that the key to happiness and life satisfaction is discovering what your ‘flow activities’ are (hobbies or passions that you just love to do so much that everything else just melts from your mind) and making them a priority in your daily life!

It breaks my heart that some people might experience physical injuries or limitations that can keep them from their flow activities. So I created Flow Acupuncture clinic as a means of ensuring that people can keep doing what they love for as long as they can!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being voted ‘Best Acupuncture Clinic in Utah’ for the last three years in a row. It has felt so fulfilling to see that our community values and supports what we do. In addition, growing Flow into a team of four other amazingly talented acupuncturists, a massage therapist, and an administrative support person all has felt like a huge accomplishment from our humble beginnings.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the hardest parts are marketing/self-promotion, building a solid team, and growing at a sustainable rate. It has been a huge learning curve trying to be an authentic and ethical ‘boss’ while navigating each team member's different needs and personalities and trying to nurture their individuality and unique talents.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small, and don’t go into debt when you’re starting up.
  2. Have a solid plan for growth and a vision for where you’re going.
  3. Get involved in your community and give back when you can.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As a business owner, a good team is invaluable. I’m grateful every day for the other acupuncturists that make Flow a success and literally could not do it without them.
