Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathrene Genosa, Founder of The Flourishry Consulting, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Flourishry helps purpose-led entrepreneurs simplify their operations and free up space for what's most meaningful to them. We offer systems and tech consulting, project management, and online business management services.

Tell us about yourself

When the pandemic hit, my long-term travel plans were put immediately on hold, and it made me think long and hard about what I really wanted. I knew I always craved the autonomy and freedom to work for myself. In my corporate experiences as a Product Marketer, Product Developer, and Project Manager, I saw one common theme that inspired The Flourishry. Having solid processes and connecting the "why/what" and "how" made a world of difference in moving meaningful work forward.

I said goodbye to my full-time job in 2021 and started to land clients who needed a true integrator to streamline their backend operations. I absolutely LOVE how getting organized, leveraging tech, and creating more efficient ways of working can create a ripple effect. With systems in place, it's freeing to be able to dedicate our energy and bandwidth to things that truly matter.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The trust we've built with our clients and how incredible it has been to partner with them on huge shifts, free up their time and see their businesses thrive as a result. We seem to attract really kind clients who want to make a positive impact in the world, and it's honestly the best feeling to work with people who share our values!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I used to struggle with finding the right balance between holding myself accountable to the goals and timelines I set and also allowing myself flexibility for things to change or unfold in other ways. Often we're always racing to the next milestone, but it's important to find a pace that works for you and own it. What works for others won't necessarily work for you, so building that self-trust is key. Running my business solo, I had to redefine what my own version of productivity looks like - it's less about how much I get done in a day but whether I am spending my time and energy on the right things. As entrepreneurs, having the freedom to live and work on our own terms is a big one.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prioritize rest and time to take care of yourself. Protect these spaces in your calendar! Taking breaks and walking away from your business can also be so re-energizing and give you new perspectives and ideas on where to go next.
  2. Invest in your systems and organization early on. When you're growing, your business needs you to be visionary and stay focused on growth activities. The last thing you want is to lose time, client confidence, or potential revenue because your processes are weighing you down, and things are disorganized!
  3. Entrepreneurship can definitely feel lonely when you're starting out, so make an effort to connect. Find a coach or mentor and reach out to similar-minded entrepreneurs. They are out there.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you're thinking about taking the leap, you'll need to embrace the duality that comes with owning a business. It is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Always celebrate your wins, no matter how tiny!
