Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nikki Murphy, owner of Florals & Scrubs, located in Bala Cynwyd, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Florals & Scrubs. I’m a local florist and floral designer. My customers are people who love flowers and need them for different occasions. Flowers are scientifically proven to release certain hormones that give us a mental and emotional boost. People should support Florals & Scrubs and local flower shops in general because we add joy & value to life experiences.

Tell us about yourself

I’m a vascular technologist by trade, but I’ve made floral arrangements as a hobby for years. When the pandemic hit, I was separated from my employer and started the brand. I needed to test the market and find out if other people liked my designs. Hence, the initial business model was a pop-up flower shop during different open-air and farmer’s markets around town. This, along with a website for the flower delivery. It was a great experience, but I decided to get a location and build relationships there and beyond. I love working in an industry that allows me to serve and add value to others while also being creative. Being your own boss is not for the faint of heart, but it’s extremely fulfilling, and the possibilities are endless in my chosen craft- these things motivate me each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner so far has been overcoming the initial fear of getting started and being courageous enough to really see this thing through! I enjoy seeing a bright future that directly results from previous obstacles.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things in owning your own brand/business is understanding that the struggle is the true gift. Remaining open to learning something new every day can be tough but worth it. Staying creative and operating from a service standpoint are skills that require discipline and consistency. Staying the course in the beginning can be difficult. As you reach different heights, you appreciate the struggles and lessons learned.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Ok, here we go, Dream Big - Stay Creative - Serve with Love, These may seem simple, but they’re supposed to be right, lol?

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Something else fun we do as a brand is our mobile floral design workshops, or Wine & Design Soirées. We bring all the supplies to host venues and create together! They’re super fun, and guests walk away with a gorgeous arrangement that they made and a new skill! They’re always a good time!
