Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Courtney Tebbutt, the founder of The Series by Court,  a floral artist in Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

I’m a floral artist based on YYC specializing in modern designs. I make custom floral arrangements, merchandise displays, art direction, events and more. I have also created pre-curated wedding boxes for easy DIY wedding flowers

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

I’m an RN who wanted a change from the health care system during the pandemic. I decided I needed to pursue my creative passions, which is when I founded The Series by Court in September of 2020. Since then I have been loving working with flowers, building my business and creating pieces I love.

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

My wedding boxes have been a huge success since there is such a gap in the market. But my biggest win was getting out of a job that was so draining and demanding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

There are many tricky parts, I’m a procrastinator, so battling to overcome that has been a work in progress. I would also say, there is a ton of hype in the media right now about starting your own business and being your own boss. Don’t compare yourself to someone who get 1m in sales in their first launch! Your time will come.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

  1. Perishable items are tricky!
  2. You will never love every single part of the business.
  3. Don’t be afraid to jump in and mix it up if you need to later!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There are so many resources out there that are free, take advantage, learn as you go, take it day by day, one challenge at a time and stay consistent!
