Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason and Songshan Flint, Owners of Flint Farm Honey, located in Paradise Valley, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a 4th generation family farm that has branched into beekeeping and honey sales. Our customers are everyone from the smallest child to the elderly grandma and grandpa who have a love for honey and our other natural bee products.

Tell us about yourself

We got our start in honey nearly a decade ago because we were eating more than a kilogram of honey a week ourselves! We thought we’d try getting some of our own bees, and slowly and with much encouragement from others, we were able to grow our hobby into a thriving small business. I think seeing our customer’s satisfaction and knowing how much they really love and appreciate our products is what motivates us to press on and continue in the honey business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think seeing our hobby become a widely recognized product throughout the region and beyond is a big accomplishment for us.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is balancing the demands of the business as well as the responsibilities of a young family. Both feel like you could throw endless energy and time at them. It’s a delicate balance to know when to put one aside and make more time for the other.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Work hard, be honest and be kind. People want to know that you are working hard to improve your product and deliver the best quality to customers. They also what to know they will be treated with respect and can trust you will do your best for them.
  2. Stick with it! It takes time to grow a business, and at times it may just be a sheer determination that gets you through.
  3. Get and keep good help around you. If you want your business to grow, you will need help. Find people who are as honest, kind, and hard-working as you are, and do your best to keep them. Make sure you are able to lean on each other, communicate well and laugh once in a while when the cart gets overturned.
