Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angaleia Philips, Co-Owner of Flex Squad Fitness, located in Pomaria, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Family-owned HIIT and Strength Gym. Our customer base is broad with anyone who is looking to improve their physical fitness.
Tell us about yourself
I started as a client of this gym over five years ago and fell in love with fitness. As a mother of 4, I found it not only physically rewarding but also a fantastic mental release. After entering a fitness competition and placing in the top 5% of 75,000 women, I began to share my workouts and created a large social media following. When given the opportunity to purchase my home gym, it was a no-brainer for my husband, who also shares my passion for fitness. We have amazing clients and have been extremely blessed by our members.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping change the lives of our clients by coaching and guiding them into their best selves.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Time demands and ensuring balance. My husband is a Marine Fireman as well as a fitness trainer. I also run a multi-family company, so we prioritize balancing our family needs with our professional demands. Family is always first.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a true knowledge of the day-to-day operational demands of the industry you're getting into. I recommend working in that field under another company or individual so you truly can make sure it is something you are passionate about and have the time for.
- Have enough financial cushion going into it that if you only break even for two years, you are financially okay.
- Make sure you have a solid support system with family, friends, and good employees. You will need their help. No one can do it all alone.
