Focus on Your Goals - Fitness Evolution
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyla Zalapski, owner of Fitness Evolution, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Fitness Evolution has been a boutique personal training studio for nearly two decades. It provides an intimate personal training experience in a relaxed and private space. Providing clients the opportunity to focus on their goals with the guidance and expertise of professional trainers. Fully outfitted with the latest equipment, the Fitness Evolution studio is a place where you can achieve the body or level of athletic performance you want without any of the traditional, big box gym hassles you don’t.
As the name implies, fitness is all about evolution! From the young aspiring athlete to the active aging population, we grow with our clients by providing age and goal-appropriate guidance. Regardless of the age or stage of life, functional fitness and longevity are paramount. Safe, enjoyable, and sustainable fitness is the ultimate focus.
Tell us about yourself
As a former diverse athlete, I began my journey into the business of fitness and nutrition when my brother, an NHL player, embarked on a large-scale health food retail store. As that business grew, the need for more personalized guidance and one on one attention became apparent. At that juncture, I became engaged in the personal service of fitness, combining it with the healthy food and nutritional focus.
I grow and learn along with my clients. As new challenges emerge, so does the expansion of knowledge and understanding of the human body.
Each human is different. It is important to approach each client with the uniqueness they bring. Helping them physically and psychologically, meeting them where they are at any given stage of life. Evolving the program and focus of the individual is what maintains long-term healthy living.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Making a positive impact on the daily lives and goals of my clients.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Commercial overhead!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be realistic. Know what the demands are (early mornings, evenings, weekends).
- Be properly educated. A weekend course does not make you certified.
- Build a base through networking of related industries (physiotherapy, Chiropractor, sports teams).
- Be humble, and learn from those who have achieved what you aspire to and learn from them.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
This business is competitive. Anyone can learn to train clients. Ultimately, longevity in this industry is about PERSONALITY! Clients will continue to come back if they enjoy the time spent with you beyond push-ups and squats. There is a reason they call it "PERSONAL" training.
