Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shelby Burns, Founder of FitnbalancedRD, located in Boston, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Hi! I am a registered dietitian in Boston who focuses on weight loss and GI health with my clients. Often, my clients don't need me to tell them WHAT to eat; they need me to help them shift their mentality, remove barriers to change, and figure out HOW to eat. I help my clients with the following:
- Learning how to whip up quick, healthy meals.
- Navigate travel eating and dining out.
- Break the diet mentality cycle.
- Provide clarity on the wealth of nutrition information out there.
- Learning how to eat intentionally and mindfully.
- Find satisfaction from food.
- Learn how to listen to and respect your body.
- Manage a variety of digestive conditions such as IBS/IBD, GERD, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's, and more.
My goal is to give my clients the tools and education to build or rebuild healthy habits that may have been pushed aside or forgotten about to achieve a balanced lifestyle.
Tell us about yourself
I was a three-sport athlete in high school. After struggling with yo-yo dieting and various GI issues, I made it my mission to help support other folks to break the diet cycle and cultivate a healthier relationship with food. I also work to support individuals who want to eat healthy but struggle because of their gut issues. I am motivated every time a client tells me they went out to eat and didn't feel guilty or were able to get back to eating their favorite foods without GI pain. Or run their first race or take part in an athletically challenging event without worrying about what they would feel before, during, or after.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think it is still yet to come, but achieving financial independence on my own is a huge accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think becoming skilled at various responsibilities that come along with being a business owner. We have to learn how to navigate social media, marketing, billing, client relationships, keeping up with licenses, and legal practices while juggling our home life and self-care.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Jump in! You won't have it all figured out from the start, and you learn the most when you're in the thick of it. Identify who you want to work with, and don't be afraid to be picky. Start as a side hustle or make sure you have enough financially until you can start to grow and support yourself.
