Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Desiree Bybee, Co-Founder, Self-Regulation Coach & Ceremonialist of FirstMemory, located in San Antonio, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have a shamanic and self-regulation coaching business. People of all ages come to me to find relief from illness, trauma, depression, overwhelm, addictions, and even a lack of purpose or personal vision. We combine ancient shamanic wisdom from South America, coaching, meditation, breathwork, bioenergetic release, weight training, yoga, cold exposure, red light therapy, and nutrition. We weave these modalities into a powerful daily practice that trains all layers of being as one integrated and interdependent system.
Tell us about yourself
I experienced a lot of trauma growing up. My front teeth were broken from 7-14, so I had a ton of developmental trauma with communication and relating to others. At 13, I lost my older sister (my idol), and she was the reason I thought I would be OK. I had to learn how to survive in the world without her. After giving up on psychotherapy, I studied with many mystics and healers who guided me, but it was when I took accountability for my life and did the personal work necessary that I found relief. My challenges were transformed into wisdom. After years of study, my sister-in-law's boyfriend was battling cancer, and my partner and I felt called to try to help. After one soul retrieval, he was symptom-free, and we felt guided to do this important work. I am so motivated every day because I know what it's like to suffer, and I can see a way out of our challenges. It is an interesting time in history. We are being called to heal and connect with the earth and each other, as well as to rise above our circumstances.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Watching people blossom in ways they never knew possible. Shedding illness and depression. To see people feel their bodies again after not having done so in many years. And to witness them see more clearly while standing in the present moment where they can put all their energy toward their dreams. It is so awesome that we can remove the chains we have built for ourselves.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The learning curve of business, financially and administratively, time management, and charging what one deserves. I have learned to lean into people who have mastered these skills.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Surround yourself with people better than you and limit contact or cut out people who cannot see your vision or who talk or behave negatively.
- Keeping up with daily practice (meditation, exercise, yoga, and shaking) will help you not only stay sane with all of the demands and letdowns but will also allow you to set intentions and attract your dreams.
- Find a need that already exists in the world and give a lot away for free to build relationships and allow people to see their value for themselves. People have a hard time with attention, but if you give them something to do or try, it becomes experiential and understood.
