Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenna Philpot, founder of First State Charcuterie, located in Georgetown, Delaware, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own First State Charcuterie, Southern Delaware's #1 Charcuterie Company and Board to Door Service. My company specializes in grazing boxes, boards, and grazing table services. We provide the ultimate grazing experience by taking your palate on a curated journey. Our artistic and delicious hand-made spreads are perfect for all occasions, including gifts, corporate luncheons, small gatherings, a day at the beach, events, weddings, holidays & more. We service all of Sussex County, some areas in lower Kent County and Eastern Shore Maryland. Whether it's one of our signature boxes, a custom board, or a grazing table, First State Charcuterie is sure to impress you and your guests.

Tell us about yourself

I launched this board-to-door service in October of 2020 after a hobby turned passion turned into a business. I absolutely love creating cheese and charcuterie spreads. Nothing brings people together more than delicious food. Although we started during COVID, we were able to provide a unique and fun option for families to spend time together. Due to shutdowns and restrictions, people were seeking more ways to be creative at home, and we were so fortunate that the community was so receptive to our service. Our customers are what keep us motivated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That I am a business owner! I've built and established my business brand, was able to quit my 9-5 job just six months after launching, and was awarded "Best Cheeseboard" by Coastal Style Magazine.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats! Especially when you are first starting out. You are literally every single title: the face, content creator, sales leader, bookkeeper, etc. It can be very overwhelming. It's important to have manageable tasks and focus on the items that need to be done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

GO FOR IT! You will always find a reason not to start. Take that first leap, believe in your passion, and do the best you can. You will learn along the way, so stay committed, stay true and keep your eye on the ultimate goal.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We are so grateful for the local community and our customers. We had so many local businesses rally behind us, offering advice and resources. And we have so many loyal customers who have been with us on this journey since the very beginning, and it's just been a wonderful ride so far. We would not have come this far without them.
