Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Géraldine Philippin, owner and plant designer of Atelier végétal, located in Montreal, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Atelier végétal is an online florist store. Local, seasonal, freshly cut, or carefully dried flowers are always prioritized. Creative workshops are also offered to individuals and companies. We also practice ethical picking to find those little treasures that are usually not available at traditional florists.
Tell us about yourself
I have a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in veterinary science. I have always loved wildlife. My background in biology has made me very aware of environmental issues. At the end of a professional contract, I had the opportunity to open the door to entrepreneurship. I had a thirst for creativity and a need to concretize my actions according to my own vision. So I switched from animals to plants and created Atelier végétal. I am passionate about what I do, and being able to share that passion through floral arrangements or creative workshops gives me an energy boost that is hard to find otherwise!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Atelier végétal has a growing demand for dried flowers. So I developed a beautiful and safe packaging to send dried flower bouquets by mail. Today, I send my dried flower bouquets all over Canada and sometimes even in Europe. This is a great accomplishment for me because my business is no longer limited to the city of Montreal.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Dealing with uncertainty (at least with a young company). Having a business means accepting that not everything works out the way you want it to right away. The evolution is made in sawtooth. Sometimes you think you're at the bottom of the barrel, but three weeks later, you feel like you've conquered the world!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
To continually adjust to the reality of the market and see opportunities. To take the time to question yourself and to sharpen your long-term vision for your business. To be able to get back on track.
