Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Murphy, Founder of Fine Tune Pilates, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is Fine Tune Pilates, and our members are a diverse group of humans of different ages, ethnicities, and abilities. The common thread is that they're all curious about how their unique body moves and want to explore movement with autonomy.

Tell us about yourself

Working with folks one-on-one in an intimate setting rather than offering a solo session in a room full of other instructors and students motivated me to do my own thing. I was curious to see how the environment could affect my service. I'm still inspired by working with people in this way; building relationships and trust with my students in a lasting way keeps me excited about what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was accepting help. When my business partner, Katrina, came on in 2017, everything about the organization shifted. Together our dreams for the company got more elaborate, a strong community formed around us, and since then, it's felt like there's so much potential long-term for this business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

THE PANDEMIC. The past two years have been extremely challenging to navigate. There was no protocol to lean on, no amount of business planning that could have made the situation easier, and not enough solid information to make sound decisions. I worried about my business, other local studios, and the Pilates industry at large.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Plan and create frameworks that clearly communicate your initiative; it can always change later. Make sure you align to the ethos of your organization authentically. As the leader of your business, modelling these characteristics for your staff and community is a powerful way to build trust in your brand.
