Slow and Steady Wins the Race - Financial Tortoise
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tae Kim, creator of Financial Tortoise, located in Buena Park, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a Personal Finance YouTuber, and I run a channel called Financial Tortoise. As the name Financial Tortoise implies, my whole channel is about getting rich slowly. I create content for individuals wanting to learn more about personal finance, investing, and building wealth slowly.
Tell us about yourself
I have always been very passionate about personal finance. My wife and I paid off $105,000 of student loans three and a half years after we were married. It took a lot of work, and we learned much from the process. I want to share what I learned with my youtube audience so they can also improve their overall finances.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I didn't have any videography or social media experience before I got started on YouTube. So I had to self-teach everything from scratch. However, despite my lack of experience, I'm proud to say I was able to grow the channel to 76K subscribers within just a little over one year.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is juggling everything that needs to get done. There are just not enough hours in a day. So you have to ruthlessly prioritize constantly. Letting some things either not get done or get done to a lesser standard so you can be excellent in the few core things that really matter.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You have to be a self-starter. Unlike a job, you don't have anyone telling you what needs to get done. You have to define that yourself.
- Get clear on your end state. Without knowing where you want to go, you will spend a lot of energy spinning your wheels and burn yourself out.
- Prioritize self-care. If you aren't healthy, your business won't be either.
