Audiovisual Translation Studio - ¡Film Translation Board

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julia Lucrecia Taveras, Founder of ¡Film Translation Board!, located in San Juan, PR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is an audiovisual translation studio that provides translations and subtitles for the film industry and marketing teams.

Tell us about yourself

I was swamped entirely after getting my MA in translation. I wanted to return to acting, but the pandemic hit. I dug deep into my skillset and contact list. I realized there needed to be local businesses aiding the distribution of local cinema through quality translations. I did various projects when I ventured out independently, but focusing on audiovisual translation packages has allowed me to grow and make my process more efficient.

Each day I'm motivated by everything I'm grateful for: a fantastic, small team; inspiring mentors; and knowing that I can still carve out a space for myself as an actor by contributing to film development in my region.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Filing my taxes correctly and surmounting my fear of numbers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not being "on it" literally 24/7. It's a tough lesson, but you need to schedule soul time. We forget, but rest is productive. It imbues the rest of our work with so much more meaning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research first (but only a little before you start building).
  2. Use what you have (aka, maximize your tools).
  3. Learn to handle a healthy level of uncertainty.
